Service tradition continues for SAU's newest facility
DAVENPORT -- St. Ambrose University blessed its new Center for Communication and Social Development Thursday afternoon.
About a 100 people gathered at the building at 1310 W. Pleasant St. where the SAU social work and speech language pathology graduate programs are housed. The school spent $1.8 to renovate the former Sisters of Humility Convent.
The dedication ceremony -- which included a choir singing hymns, prayers for SAUstaff and students and Bishop Martin Amos sprinkling holy water on the building -- coincided with the school's Founder's Day and SAU's 128th year, according to president Sister Joan Lescinski.
While the building is new to SAU, Sister Lescinski said it certainly is not new to community service. Like the Sisters of Humility, she said, SAU students will use the building to serve the community, reaching out to those in need.
Bishop Amos, who chairs SAU's board of trustees, echoed that view.
"Today, we celebrate our Founder's Day by blessing a building that will continue a tradition of community outreach and betterment through the work of our social work and speech pathology programs," he said. "Once home to the Sisters of Humility, this building has already served our community as a place of faith and learning, and it will continue this tradition for many years to come."
