Equilateral, one of Iowa's top jazz bands, will play the Redstone Room Friday night.
The members are Chris Merz (saxes), Brent Sandy (trumpet), Greg Mazunik (bass) and Eric Thompson (drums). Mr. Merz and Mr. Sandy have worked together extensively since 2000, when Mr. Merz took a teaching position at the University of Northern Iowa. Mr. Mazunik has freelanced around the Iowa City area for 10 years, and Mr. Thompson recently returned from New York City.
The Cedar Falls-based band has recorded two CDs -- "Also Not Pictured ..." and "... And Another Thing." The leading jazz bassist Steve Swallow wrote for their liner notes, when the band was a trio:
"Really vital trio playing doesn't settle for the usual tactics, and requires nerve and agility... They're all thoughtful, articulate players, but beyond that they've resolved to work together for the music. This music never sinks to rhetoric; the ingenious, intriguing writing insists that each of these excellent musicians search for fresh approaches to playing in the moment. This challenge is answered boldly."
The members of Equilateral have played with Billy Taylor, Dave Brubeck, Darius Brubeck, Chris Brubeck, Danny Brubeck, Steve Swallow, Carla Bley, Donnie McCaslin, Guaranteed Swahili, Steve McCraven, and the Jeff Holmes Big Band. They have performed at Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), Ozone Festival (Neuchatel, Switzerland), Iowa City Jazz Festival, Guiness Jazz Festival (Johannesburg, South Africa), and Bright Moments Festival (Amherst, Mass.).
Equilateral will play at the Redstone Room, 129 Main St., Davenport, at 9 p.m. Friday. Tickets are on sale for $5 at www.redstoneroom.com. For more information, visit www.myspace.com/equilateraljazz.
