This essay on heroism was chosen as the best by the Quad City Symphony Orchestra in a recent contest.

It was written by Hanna Pitts, a sixth-grade student at John Glenn School, Donahue, Iowa. She will get free tickets to this weekend's concert; up to three complimentary tickets to each remaining Masterworks concerts for the 2009-10 season; and a $100 gift certificate from Barnes & Noble.

My definition of a hero is someone you look up to, or someone who is always there for you when you need them.

My dad is my hero because I have always looked up to him, and I always will. He has followed his dreams and never gave up. He helps me whenever I need help, or when I'm sad.

The music I would play for a hero is some really loud and exciting music that lets people know that your hero is here for you.

The opposite of a hero is someone that brings you down whenever you are near them, or they are always negative and never friendly.
