Center for Living Arts sets auditions for comedy, Munchkins
Rock Island's Center for Living Arts is creating a new comedy group, with auditions for 10 spots.
The auditions -- for eighth-graders through young adults -- will be at the center, 2008 4th Ave., at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, and 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14. Those auditioning should prepare a 1-2 minute comedic monologue or scene. Partner auditions are accepted.
The new troupe, tentatively called The Fourth City, will meet Tuesdays and Saturdays for writing and rehearsals, beginning in January. The center is looking for dedicated performers in the style of Chicago's Second City and "Saturday Night Live." The center will offer sketch-writing training and workshops. Actors will be paid for performances, but not for rehearsal.
Beginning in February, the comedy troupe will perform on the third weekend (Friday and Saturday) of every month.The performances will host local high-school bands as musical guests and will feature a different high-school drama group as guest stars each month.
The center is holding auditions at 10:30 a.m. this Saturday for 12 Munchkins needed for the national touring production of "The Wizard of Oz," coming to the Adler Theatre, Davenport, Nov. 29. Auditioners should bring a song and be prepared to dance.
The center needs 12 performers age 8-13 who are no more than 5 feet tall and 100 pounds. They should be good singers who move well and have great energy and personality onstage. Rehearsals will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays.
