Community Riverfront Update Open House

Members of the Community are invited to a Community Riverfront Update Open House, Tuesday November 24 from 12 o'clock noon until 5:00pm. The Open House will be held at the Rock Falls Community Development Corporation's office at 309 First Avenue in Rock Falls. The Community is welcome and will be provided with an update on the proposed renovation options for the former Reliant site.

Mayor Blanton said "We want to keep the Community in touch with what we are doing. This is a process that doesn't happen overnight and it cost a lot of money. We want the Community to get a feel for the responsible path that we are undertaking."

Renovation of the site began with the utilization of IEPA and USEPA funds secured for clean-up after the fire in December of 2007. Development continues with the demolition of structures on the east end of the site and assessment of remaining structures.

"Economic Development is a process unlike any other," said Sandy Henrekin, Executive Director of the Rock Falls Community Development Corporation. "There are many steps that have to be accomplished with a development project such as this and the Committee wants to make sure no steps are missed."

Because of the positioning of the city of Rock Falls within Northwest Illinois and the project area's location, a great deal of interest is coming forward with ideas for future development. The site itself has many great, unique qualities and opportunities making it a choice location destination for businesses and professionals.

Henrekin continued, "All avenues are being considered for site preparation. The site has a lot of issues that need to be addressed and taken care of so we can attract quality developers."

Community members are invited to come in and view proposed plans for the site as well as renditions of potentials development areas. The doors will be open from noon until 5:00 that day and there will be Committee members present to answer any questions.

The Community is also invited to make a suggestion on what to they think would be a good innovative name for the project area. The Committee would like to name the district for marketing purposes. Your suggestions can be sent to the RFCDC office at 309 First Avenue in Rock Falls or submit your suggestion to email address coordinator@rockfallsdevelopment.org by November 30. After all suggestions have been reviewed, the Committee will choose the three top names and Community will vote for the best name.

"The City's Riverfront Committee has been working very hard to bring about change at the former Reliant site and we would very much like to share our progress with the Community," said Jack Spencer, Riverfront Committee Chairman. "The renovation of a riverfront such as ours is an opportunity that comes along only about once in 100 years. We are talking about the future of our community now and for generations to come. We want to make sure we get it done right."
