SUPPORTING THOSE IN NEED

Scholarship Membership Program Turns No One Away Due to Inability to Pay

MOLINE, IL – November 20, 2009 – The Two Rivers YMCA is pleased to announce that its membership scholarship program has provided over 1,735 people with opportunities to improve spirit, mind and body in 2009. Through October the Two Rivers YMCA approved over 600 scholarship membership applications resulting in $191,000 in subsidized membership, or 85% more dollars than all of last year. "We've experienced over 40% more requests in the first ten months of 2009 than we had in all of 2008," said Mike Wennekamp, Associate Executive Director.

As area residents face economic stress due to workforce layoffs and other factors, the YMCA is proud to offer participation in YMCA programs and services without additional financial worries. "YMCAs have been helping American families and individuals in good times and challenging times for more than 160 years," said Mr. Wennekamp. "We want our community to know that we are here to help anyone seeking a healthier spirit, mind and body, regardless of their current circumstances."

Increased financial aid would not have been possible without the support of the Quad Cities Community. The Two Rivers YMCA is able to meet increasing need thanks to the many volunteers and supporters of the annual Strong Kids Campaign. "In an economy that has many non-profits cutting programs, the outstanding support the community has given the Two Rivers YMCA has made it possible not only to not cut programs, but to increase services for those who need them most," said Dan Osterman, Executive Director/CEO. Because of this support, the YMCA does not turn anyone away due to their inability to pay.

The Two Rivers YMCA is a non-profit organization committed to helping individuals, children and families become healthy in spirit, mind and body. The YMCA unites men, women and children of all ages, faiths, backgrounds, abilities and income levels and offers a variety of programs and services focused on the holistic development of youth, family strengthening and wellness for all. Collectively, 2,686 YMCAs comprise one of the country's largest not-for-profit community service organizations.
