The Salvation Army of the Quad Cities Announces their 2009 Honorary Kettle Chairperson, Dorothy Milburn

You may have never heard her name, or seen her face, but like many volunteers in the Quad Cities, she quietly helps those around her as she volunteers for a charity she has known and loved her whole life.

Dorothy Milburn, at age 79, doesn't get around as easily as she used to. She has had a stroke and half her mouth is paralyzed. A fractured back has kept here from walking straight up, but still she uses her legs while in a wheelchair to get around. Both hands are extremely arthritic and braces keep them functioning.

She has been volunteering at The Salvation Army's Davenport Corps for over 40 years. Over those years she has helped thousands of families sign-up for the Christmas Assistance Program with compassion and a listening ear.

And that is why she is our chairperson – she shows the spirit of compassion to others while showing them that if she can do it, they can do it.

A colleague states, "The first time I met Dorothy, she was interviewing clients for The Salvation Army's Christmas Assistance Program. That is a very hard volunteer activity to find help for because it is every day of November, right in the middle of the day. She is extraordinary. I think she inspires me as much as anyone I've ever met."

She can be applauded for her rare spirit on Saturday, November 21 during the Festival of Trees Parade. She'll be the little pistol in the Ford, right behind of The Salvation Army's Emergency Disaster Canteen, and surrounded by children reminding everyone to Help Us Ring In the Season.
