If we cannot have decent and safe walks, we had better repeal the ordinance - -or repeal the city charter and turn the town out to pasture. It is nonsense to say that any man who has even the energy of a goose cannot build a decent plank walk in front of his premises. 1887 -- 125 years ago: The Rock Island Board of Education has awarded a contract to Thomas Murdock for additional brickwork at Rock Island High School for $519.30. 1912 -- 100 years ago: The Davenport-Muscatine electric railroad line was opened yesterday. 1937 -- 75 years ago: Public schools of Rock Island will conclude the 1936-37 year on Friday of next week, according to an announcement today by Selmer H. Berg, superintendent. 1962 -- 50 years ago: Horses from a wide area of western and central Illinois and eastern Iowa are expected to compete tomorrow in the annual variety horse show sponsored by the Illowa Horsemen's Club at Loud Thunder Forest Preserve, which is located on Illinois 92 between Andalusia and Illinois City. 1987 -- 25 years ago: Moline High School students honored Vietnam veterans on Tuesday with the dedication of a new bronze plaque to be hung in the auditorium hallway at the school. The plaque was a project of the Moline High School Student Congress and the National Honor Society to replace a smaller wooden plaque that has been defaced, said Roberta Mountz, one of the student organizers of the project.

1963 -- 50 years ago: The American Wind Symphony Orchestra will present two concertsin the Quad-Cities on Aug. 6, performing from its specially equipped stage-barge. Thebarge, which is traveling the Mississippi River route, will be moored just off the shore forthe concerts.
1988 -- 25 years ago: Fines for overdue items at the Rock Island Public Library are beingincreased to 10 cents per day per item effective July 1. Fines will not be prorated onbooks returned after that date.
