Letter: Obama making best of bad situation he inherited

Any newspaper which would put in the cartoon of our president like the one you did June 10 not only is disrespectful, but un-American. President Bush took us into a no-win war and after 11 years of spend, spend, spend, we are coming home. The war cost billions of dollars and never helped an American. In fact, the boys are killing themselves. They can't see any sense to it and neither can I. It was a mess when President Obama first agreed to run, then it got worse. He is doing the best he can with a highly political Congress that doesn't want to help the country, only hurt the president. Is that selfish and unpatriotic? I hope Mitt Romney gets elected. He's never really worked a day in his life -- a real job. He's always had money. His parents had money even during the Great Depression. What does he know about people like you and me? Republicans won't pay for mammograms, or birth control for poor women so poor women have more children, etc. Republicans and Democrats have both said we need good heath care, but Republicans never got it passed or cared. I'm really glad I'm older. When I was young, people cared about people. It was not so political. I've read the book about the leader of the House who was able to compromise. Ted Kennedy and some Republicans were getting along and helping the country. I can't see helping Afghanistan schools, buildings, etc. We need that money here. I'm kidding about Mitt. He's a bully and a rich kid who likes bullies and rich kids. Jean Honsa, Rock Island

1938 -- 75 years ago: Mrs. Thomas Ackles, of Rock Island, has been elected president ofthe Playcrafters for the next season. She succeeds Warren Leonard.
1963 -- 50 years ago: Some 8,000 people filed through the gates of Rock Island Arsenal on Saturday to view a display of a part of the nation's armed strength. The occasion was theannual observance of Armed Forces Day.
1988 -- 25 years ago: Willis Kuschmann, of Moline, who already has won his laurels as oneof the most artistic men in the Quad-Cities area, has a new hobby. He is deeply involvedin miniature railroading. At the age of 88, when many other seniors are dozing in theirchairs or sitting before the television, Mr. Kuschmann is planning and working on hiscollection.
