The Rock Island County Historical Society will hold an open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at 822 11th Ave., Moline. The exhibit "A History of Pioneers in Rock Island County Townships" will be on display in the library.
"The townships have an amazing history, which is unknown to many of the citizens of the county, especially in the upper and lower county areas, and we want to share that with our community," said Bobbi Jackson, RICHS executive director and archivist. The society wants to increase its visibility and connections to the businesses and people in the upper and lower ends of the county, she said.
The Atkinson-Peek House and Clothes Loft will have new displays, including a military room at the Atkinson-Peek House, which will be open for the first time. It will feature new displays and artifacts from the War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II and the Korean War. A cannonball found on Campbell's Island, which is thought to have been shot during the 1814 battle between John Campbell and Black Hawk and the Sauk Indians, will be on display.
The Clothes Loft will feature garments and uniforms dating from the Civil War to the Korean War. "Wartime period clothing is not as available as clothing from other eras, as fabric had limited availability, and many pieces of clothing were worn to shreds," said Catherine Litwinow, curator of the Clothes Loft. Service medals, images, personal effects and paper artifacts used by Rock Island County residents or their ancestors will be on display in both locations.
Authors Janet Meyer and Curtis Roseman will sign copies of their new books from 1 to 3 p.m. in the library. Ms. Meyer's book, "The Family of John Deere," contains historical information on the descendants of John Deere, and Mr. Roseman's book, "Building the American Dream," highlights a Swedish immigrant carpenter and contractor in Moline in the early 20th century.
There also will be flower potting for kids, and free punch, coffee and cookies.
