Rock Island has received five bids from consulting firms vying to help the city find a new library director.
John Thorson, Rock Island's administrative services director, said searches for executives usually are conducted in-house, but after a failed national search, the library board decided to hire a consulting firm to find a replacement for Ava Ketter, who retired May 1.
"They're going to pretty much conduct the search," Mr. Thorson said.
Mr. Thorson said the city put out a request for bids on May 29 with a June 18 deadline. He said there are no consulting firms in the Quad-Cities area who could provide the services the library board is seeking.
The five firms that submitted bids are: Voorhees Associates, Deerfield; Slavin Management Consultants, Norcross, Ga.; The Mercer Group, Atlanta, Ga.; Bradbury Consulting, Topeka, Kan.; and Sikich, with offices in Chicago, Rockford, Decatur, Naperville, Springfield, St. Louis and Greenwood Village, Colo.
Mr. Thorson said Rock Island worked with Voorhees Associates in the search that resulted in hiring city manager Thomas Thomas. He estimates that hiring a consulting firm to help with the search for a library director will cost $14,000 to $20,000.
Mr. Thorson said the library board will review bids until July 6 and view presentations by the bidders the week of July 16. The bid likely will be awarded July 23, but that date is tentative, Mr. Thorson said.
Once the bid is awarded, Mr. Thorson said he expects that an offer will be made to a candidate by Nov. 1. He said the new library director will make $64,794 to $100,515, depending on experience.
