1862 -- 150 years ago: The telegraphic rumor from Washington today, that a general exchange of prisoners is to take place, will carry joy to thousands of hearts. We hope that the rumor is well founded.

1887 -- 125 years ago: J.J. Reimers last night was elected president of the newly organized Rock Island board of education.

1912 -- 100 years ago: Sarah Bernhardt, famous French actress, will appear at the Majestic Theater, Rock Island, next week in "Camille."

1937 -- 75 years ago: About 500 persons were at the 31st Street station yesterday morning to get a glimpse of the new Rock Island Rocket streamlined, diesel-powered train as it stopped here on an initial run to the Elks national convention in Denver.

1962 -- 50 years ago: A bird entered by the VanDeWiele loft won first place in the race sponsored from Chicago Heights to East Moline Sunday by the East Moline Pigeon Club. There were 207 birds released at 7 a.m. and the winner flew 146 miles in three hours and 51 minutes.

1987 -- 25 years ago: Despite high Saturday afternoon temperatures that melted sno-cones and boosted pop and beer sales, a large crowd helped the 1987 Rock Island Summer Festival keep on cooking into its final night.

1963 -- 50 years ago: Miss Patrice Daly, Rock Island, a senior at Rock Island HighSchool, won second place in the recent state public speaking contest held in Peoria underthe auspices of the Knights of Pythias.
1988 -- 25 years ago: Hampton's sesquicentennial committee and the Hampton HistoricalSociety have scheduled a full slate of activities, which will be held throughout the year, to celebrate the village's 150th birthday. The first celebration will be the Memorial Dayprogram at 10 a.m. May 30, at the Brettun and Black Store Museum on River Road. Therewill be a sesquicentennial display.
