Few things in this world beat listening to live music outdoors on a warm summer night.

If you're entertaining kiddos, events that are geared toward kids and also are fun for Mom and Dad might be music to your ears.

Whether you're looking for music or family fun, you'll find plenty this weekend around the Quad-Cities.

If it weren't for the Zac Brown Band show at the i wireless Center Friday night, and the fact that my husband and I have to complete Operation: 47 Loads of Laundry this weekend, we definitely would be hitting up the following:

Future of Rock Showcase

Catch hours of rock-steady tunes Friday outside the Rock Island Brewing Company, 1815 2nd Ave., Rock Island.

Gates for the all-ages show will open at 6 p.m., and the show will begin at 7:30.

Four bands will take the stage, including Three Years Hollow, Eleven Fifty Two, The Blushing Gun and My Pal Trigger.

Three Years Hollow is a hard rock/metal group from the Quad-Cities. Check the band out at threeyearshollow.com or on Facebook.

Eleven Fifty Two (11:52) also is a hard rock/metal group from the Quad-Cities. Learn more about the band on Facebook or at reverbnation.com/elevenfiftytwo.

The Blushing Gun is an alternative-rock band out of Chicago. For more information, check out its Facebook page or website at blushinggun.com.

My Pal Trigger is a heavy-metal band from Rock Island. For more information, check it out on Facebook or at reverbnation.com/mypaltrigger.

Tickets cost $7 at the gate, or $5 in advance from any of the bands playing or from their websites.

REO Speedwagon

REO Speedwagon will take the stage at 8 p.m. Friday at the grandstand at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds, 2815 W. Locust St., Davenport.

The veteran 45-year-old rock band -- fronted by iconic vocalist Kevin Cronin since 1972 -- is the main non-country act appearing at this year's fair.

The band last performed in the Quad-Cities at the Adler Theatre in March 2008. Before that, the band came to The Mark in 2005 with Styx.

REO has sold 22 million albums in the U.S. -- 40 million around the globe -- with hit singles including "Ridin' The Storm Out," "Roll With the Changes," "Time for Me to Fly," "Keep On Loving You" and "Can't Fight This Feeling."

Admission to the grandstand shows at the fair is by FunCard only. Cards are $45 at Hy-Vee stores and Taco Bells, online at mvfair.com, and at the fair office. Children ages 3 and younger will be admitted for free.

Crime Stoppers 5K Run

Lace up your running shoes and hit the pavement Saturday morning at the 11th annual Crime Stoppers of the Quad Cities 5K run.

The event will begin with the 5K race at 7:30 a.m., followed by a one-mile race at 8:30 and a quarter-mile fun run at 8:45, all beginning at Bass Street Landing, 17th Street and River Drive, Moline.

Proceeds gathered from the race will help fund a large portion of the local Crime Stoppers program.

Roughly 800 runners are expected at this year's race, including area police officers and firefighters who will participate in teams of five in a "Guns & Hoses" challenge.

One hundred runners ages 12 and younger will win a bicycle just for participating.

Race packet pickup is from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at Stoney Creek Inn, 101 18th St., Moline. Register at packet pickup, or from 6 to 7 a.m. on race day, or online at qccrimestoppers.com/race or getmeregistered.com.

Midwest Folk Festival

You can tour the historic Illinois village of Bishop Hill and enjoy music, dance, artisan demonstrations and other activities Sunday at the Midwest Folk Festival.

The free festival will highlight the ethnic and folk artists of the Midwestern states that border the Mississippi River, according to the website bishophill.com.

The festival is going on all weekend, but we might have better luck trying to make it out on Sunday.

For more information, visit bishophill.com or call (309) 927-3899.

While I plan to play Cinderella most of this weekend, perhaps I'll grant myself a brief reprieve from housework to have a little fun. Say hi if you bump into me!
