Democrat Cheri Bustos has released her first campaign commercial as the 17th Congressional District election heats up. Filmed at Frank's Pizza in Silvis, the TV ad -- which can be viewed at youtube.com/watch -- introduces the East Moline Democrat and her family to voters. The former health care executive presents herself as a working mother who understands the concerns of middle class voters. She finishes the ad by saying, "It's time to put Main Street ahead of Wall Street." By last month, the Bustos campaign and her opponent, U.S. Rep. Bobby Schilling, R-Colona, had reserved more than $1 million in ad space in the Quad-Cities market alone. The 17th District spans 14 counties, running from Peoria to Freeport and part of Rockford. Internal polling by the two campaigns has shown Ms. Bustos has work to do to build her name recognition. A recent internal poll by the Schilling campaign had Ms. Bustos trailing him by 13 points; a Bustos poll from February had her behind by 9 points. Both surveys showed Rep. Schilling is much better known than Ms. Bustos. But the Bustos poll found that, when voters were given positive information about her and Rep. Schilling, she established a lead. The Schilling campaign plans to release its first TV ad Sept. 12, spokesman Jon Schweppe said. Ads paid for by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and The New Prosperity Foundation, a Chicago super PAC, have run in the district in support of Rep. Schilling. On Monday, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee launched new robocalls into the district critical of Rep. Schilling.
