Ridgewood volleyball team hosts diabetes fundraiser

CAMBRIDGE - The Ridgewood volleyball team will host a fundraiser volleyball event Tuesday to raise money for diabetes research and to support team member Brooklyn Wexell, who is diabetic. The "Digging for Diabetes" event will begin at 6 p.m. at Cambridge High School with a freshman-sophomore game, followed by the varsity game at 7 p.m. There will be raffles, a silent auction, 50/50 drawing and T-shirts, with all proceeds going to diabetes research. The $3 admission free for adults and $2 for students goes to game referees. Ms. Wexell, an athlete and cheerleader, was diagnosed with diabetes in the fifth grade. She was afraid she might have to give up sports, but didn't. She said it means a lot to her that teammates check on her to be sure her sugar levels are correct. "I'm thankful that they are helping me and trying to support me," she said. "It makes me feel a lot better about myself that they do care." Team coach Lisa Miller said teammates recognize when Brooklyn's attitude changes or she's moving slower and always know where her medical bag is with tests, a quick sugar fix or an insulin shot if she needs it.
