November 17, 9 a.m.-Noon Its River Action's last rain barrel sale of the year – don't miss this opportunity! River Action will be selling its rain barrels on Saturday, November 17th from 9 a.m.-Noon. Come to the east parking lot between Java Java and Fitz-Rite Custom Bath and Kitchen on River Drive between Federal and Tremont Streets. We'll help you load it into your vehicle and be able to answer all your rain barrel related questions. These recycled, 60-gallon food-grade plastic barrels are equipped with a down-spout diverter, a spigot, overflow valve, and mosquito screen. Rain barrels effectively capture and store runoff from roofs during small to moderate storms which can then be used to irrigate lawns and landscaped areas between storm events. Barrels sell for $75 each for a barrel with a standard sized diverter, and $80 for a larger diverter. Similar barrels retail in stores and catalogues for $135. You may pay by check or cash at the time of sale, or pre-order on-line at www.riveraction.org. Rain Barrels are sold on a first-come-first-served basis. River Action is a bi-state organization dedicated to fostering the environmental, economic, and cultural vitality of the Mississippi and its riverfront. 1938 -- 75 years ago: Mrs. Thomas Ackles, of Rock Island, has been elected president ofthe Playcrafters for the next season. She succeeds Warren Leonard.
1963 -- 50 years ago: Some 8,000 people filed through the gates of Rock Island Arsenal on Saturday to view a display of a part of the nation's armed strength. The occasion was theannual observance of Armed Forces Day.
1988 -- 25 years ago: Willis Kuschmann, of Moline, who already has won his laurels as oneof the most artistic men in the Quad-Cities area, has a new hobby. He is deeply involvedin miniature railroading. At the age of 88, when many other seniors are dozing in theirchairs or sitting before the television, Mr. Kuschmann is planning and working on hiscollection.
