Port Byron to warn trustee about missing meetings

PORT BYRON -- Board members on Tuesday discussed the absenteeism of Trustee Shawn VanDriessche. Mr. VanDriessche has been present for only two meetings in the last six months. Mayor Bob Wilson said the next step is to censure him. "If he doesn't show up after he gets the letter, we'll terminate him," said Mayor Wilson. "Obviously we'd like to have everyone here; that is the procedure we have to follow." Trustee Todd Wiebenga said a formal letter would be too harsh and agreed to call Mr. VanDriessche this week to discuss the matter. "It's important to have members here for discussion and votes," he said. "Obviously we don't do this for the money, we do it for the service of our community. But you can't serve the community if you're never here." In other news, the board learned a resident building a home on 217th Street tapped into the water line without the village's permission. Public Works Director Don Loy said the home is across the street from a water main and, with the help of a plumber friend, the resident illegally tapped into the water line during evening hours. Trustee Kevin Klute said Port Byron needs a process to prevent such action from happening again. "How does it end up that a guy runs a line 20 yards at 8 at night and hooks up to our water main?" he asked. Board members agreed to have plumbing inspector Tim Ropp contact the resident. The line must be dug up, inspected and attached with a water meter at the resident's home.
