Quinn pushes pension reform, sees casino opening

CHICAGO (AP) — Gov. Pat Quinn has signaled he's back in the thick of tackling Illinois' most pressing problems after keeping a relatively low public profile leading up to the November election. He says details are coming soon on a grass-roots plan he announced months ago to win support for overhauling the state's underfunded pension plans. And he's set a Jan. 9 deadline to achieve reforms. Quinn sat down with The Associated Press this week to discuss challenges ahead. He says pension reform is indispensable and the formula to fix the system already exists. He also says he's open to a new proposal to expand gambling, even though lawmakers are trying to override his veto. Quinn helped Illinois allow civil unions last year and says he doesn't think gay marriage is far off.

Although she's been teaching for 43 years at the school, Miss Dayfound a new way of arriving at the school this morning. At 7:30 a.m., a police squad carpulled up in front of Miss Day's home and escorted her to school. A caravan of students' cars joined the procession along the way.
1988 -- 25 years ago: Barbecue cooking and riverfront antics are planned for Discover the
River Day Saturday in Leach Park, Bettendorf. A 5K run, wind surfing, a canoe race, hogcalling and more will round out the day under the Interstate 74 bridge.
