CAMBRIDGE -- One vote made the difference on the Henry County Board after all.|
After the official results were in, Kippy Nelson of Cambridge reversed the Election Night's five-vote loss to Tom Wiley of Cambridge, turning it into a one-vote lead.
Mr. Wiley had until the close of business Friday to file for a recount at the county clerk's office, but he did not do so.
"I appreciate that they are not going for a recount," said Ms. Nelson. "It's nice to be able to put this to rest and move forward with the business at hand. "I still feel really bad for Tom," she said, adding she appreciates his decision. "It says a lot about him as a person."
The final tally was Ms. Nelson, 4,043 votes; and Mr. Wiley, 4,042.
The switch also means the Republicans will have an 11-9 majority on the board rather than a 10-10 composition.
"I'm excited that it's final," said county board chairman Tim Wells. "It's not going to be drawn out into courts and lawyers all over a county board seat."
The county board will have a reorganization meeting at 6 p.m. Dec. 3 at which the chairman and vice chairman will be selected and committee assignments will be made, and board members will be assigned to serve for either two or four years to stagger their terms.
Mr. Wiley was not available for comment Friday.
