Secretary of State Offices to Close for New Year's Day

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that all offices and Driver Services facilities will be closed on Tuesday, January 1, 2013, for New Year's Day.
All Driver Services facilities will reopen for regular business on Wednesday, January 2, 2013.
Individuals can visit the Secretary of State's website, www.cyberdriveillinois.com, to change an address, register to become an organ and tissue donor or renew license plate stickers by mail.

City of Davenport will observe New Year's Day as a holiday on Tuesday, January 1, 2013. All City of Davenport offices will be closed.

Police Department front desk and lobby area will be closed.

Library Main and Eastern branches will be closed Monday, December 31, 2012 and Tuesday, January 1, 2013. Fairmount branch will be closed Sunday, December 30, Monday, December 31, and Tuesday, January 1.

Parks and Recreation Department administrative offices and River's Edge facility will be closed Tuesday, January 1.

Vander Veer Conservatory will be closed Monday, December 31, and Tuesday, January 1.

Adler Theatre box office will be closed Tuesday, January 1.

Timed parking will not be enforced. No charge to park at the Redstone parking ramp (101 Main Street), the RiverCenter parking ramp (102 East Second Street), and the Harrison Street parking ramp (202 Harrison Street).

CitiBus service will end one hour early on Monday, December 31; no CitiBus service on Tuesday, January 1.

Compost Facility will be closed Tuesday, January 1.

Garbage, recycling, bulky waste and yard waste will be picked up as scheduled on Monday, December 31. Pickup for Tuesday through Friday will be one day later; Friday pickup will be on Saturday. Yard waste collection, including live Christmas trees, ends for the season on Friday, January 11, 2013. Please refer the solid waste collection calendar for further information.

"HEALTH DEPARTMENT CLOSED FOR NEW YEARS HOLIDAY"

The Henry and Stark County Health Departments would like to inform area
residents that our offices, Route 78 South, Kewanee and 103 1st St., Colona
will be closed on Tuesday, January 1st in observance of the New Year's
Holiday.

However, limited home health and homemaker staff will be working on
those days to provide necessary in-home care.

1864 -- 150 years ago: The board of education has granted Thursday as a holiday for the children, with the expectation that parents who desire to have their children attend the Scott County Fair will do so on that day and save irregularity the rest of the week.
1889 -- 125 years ago: The guard fence around the new cement walk at the Harper House has been removed. The blocks are diamond shape, alternating in black and white.
1914 -- 100 years ago: The Rev. R.B. Williams, former pastor of the First Methodist Church, Rock Island, was named superintendent of the Rock Island District.
1939 -- 75 years ago: Abnormally high temperatures and lack of rainfall in Illinois during the past week have speeded maturing of corn and soybean crops.
1964 -- 50 years ago: Installation of a new television system in St. Anthony's Hospital, which includes a closed circuit channel as well as the three regular Quad-Cities channels, has been completed and now is in operation.
1989 -- 25 years ago: When the new Moline High School was built in 1958, along with it were plans to construct a football field in the bowl near 34th Street on the campus. Wednesday afternoon, more than 30 years later, the Moline Board of Education Athletic Board sent the ball rolling toward the possible construction of that field by asking superintendent Richard Hennigan to take to the board of education a proposal to hire a consultant.
