American war sacrifices seen by Europe topic of historical society
Bruce Peterson will show pictures and discuss how Europeans honored American sacrifices in World War I and World War II at the Port Byron Historical Society meeting at 7 p.m. today on the second floor of the River Valley District, 214 S. Main St., Port Byron.
Mr. Peterson will show pictures of the Vietnam and WWII memorials in Washington, D.C., and pictures of the Vietnam War, in which he served in 1968 and 1969.
Silvis to honor library director at open house
The Silvis Public Library will hold an open house for retiring library director Imogene Jensen from 3 to 5 p.m. Jan. 12. The public is invited to say goodbye to Ms. Jensen and meet new director Laura Long.

The Silvis Fire Department is hosting a blood drive from 8 a.m. to noon Jan. 12 at the fire station. Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome. Learn about boat safety at class

Make your own cards at library
The Silvis Public Library, 105 8th St., will host a card-making class with Donna Banta from noon to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 19. She will help people create greeting cards. Windmill center hosting free programs
Volunteer educators at the Windmill Cultural Center in Fulton will hold free adult programs from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays in January, February and March at the building opposite the windmill. It is handicapped accessible.
On Jan. 2, four Fulton volunteers who went to Ireland to exchange ideas on how to integrate windmills into their communities will speak.
On Jan. 9 and 16, there will be travel programs about New Zealand by Ron and Connie Koehn, who have visited New Zealand four times.
On Jan. 19, David Koopman, author of "Quad-City International Airport," will speak.
