A family escaped uninjured after a neighbor alerted them to a fire in the attic of their home at 147 6th Ave., Moline, on Friday.|
Karen and Abel Garcia said they were inside with their two children when the neighbor knocked on the door as smoke poured out of the attic at about 3:20 p.m.
Moline firefighters arrived on the scene about four minutes after receiving an emergency call, said Moline Battalion Chief Todd Allen. The blaze was under control after 20 minutes, he said, with some damage visible in the attic of the home.
The cause of the fire still is under investigation, Mr. Allen said at the scene.
Five units from Moline responded to the fire and support also was provided by the Rock Island Fire Department, Mr. Allen said.
He said the home appeared to be split into two apartments and there were no occupants inside by the time firefighters arrived.
Karen and Abel Garcia watched the firefighters extinguish the blaze from the street.
Ms. Garcia said the family planned to stay with a relative until it was safe to return to their home. She was unsure what started the fire.
