PORT BYRON -- Riverdale School Board members on Monday discussed installing bullet-proof glass in district schools.
Superintendent Ron Jacobs presented an estimate of $4,527 to install the glass in the front entrance of Riverdale Elementary School. Another option is to redesign the entrances of the elementary, middle and high schools to reduce the amount of glass currently present, he said.
"There are a lot of things we can do to make sure those entrances are intruder-proof," said Mr. Jacobs. "We want to make sure it's in our best interest to install these doors."
Also on Monday, the board postponed a vote until February on changing credit requirements for students graduating from Riverdale High School.
"We don't want to make it difficult for kids to graduate, but we have to meet the ever-growing mandate that testing is," said principal Rick Dwyer.
At issue is the addition of a third science class seniors would need to graduate and a combined government and U.S. history class.
"I don't think it's fair to throw it on juniors," said high school science teacher Jim Campbell. "I think it's fair to introduce it to incoming freshmen. We're talking earth and environmental science, not high-level math science."
The board also approved Moline's withdrawal from the Black Hawk Area Special Education District.Mr. Jacobs said it's more cost-efficient for the district's remaining 13 members to use a private provider, adding he and three other superintendents have visited some privately-run facilities to assess it as an option.
He said the superintendent's advisory committee will make a decision in February.
"The message I want to send from the Riverdale community is we want the best for our students," he said.
The board also honored the district's Illinois State Scholars: Kelsey Darin, Meghan Dickson, Amanda Hoerres, Caroline Simmons and Taylor McMullen. State scholars are determined by a combination of SAT scores and grade point averages.
