1863 -- 150 years ago: One million dollars was paid by the government to thecommissioners last week to recompense slave owners in the District of Columbia for theemancipation of their slaves.
1888 -- 125 years ago: Wessie-Ritchie and Andrew and Martin Bloomquist were injuredin a coasting accident yesterday on 17th Street hill.
1913 -- 100 years ago: The Tri-City Railway Company has ordered 20 more pay-as-you-enter street cars for $110,000.
1938 -- 75 years ago: One hundred and eighty men are employed on WPA projectsat Moline Airport since authorities in charge of the federal projects gave them anopportunity to make up time they lost during bad weather.
1963 -- 50 years ago: Dr. Dorothy Parkander, associate professor of English atAugustana College, will be the first woman ever to lecture at the annual midwinterconvocation of the Lutheran School of Theology, Rock Island. The opening session ofthe convocation is set for 10 a.m. tomorrow in Ascension Chapel.
1988 -- 25 years ago: The relatively recent tragedies that have resulted in the deaths oftwo of our young men in the Port Byron area have touched the hearts of many withinthe community. The concerned citizens of this community can no longer be acceptingof the timetable established by the state to improve Port Byron Road. It is for thispurpose alone that I urge you to consider walking on Saturday to demonstrate we as acommunity can no longer be complacent.

1913 -- 100 years ago: Captain H.F. Young, former Mississippi river pilot, and T.W.Chapman left Rock Island today for Alaska to enter river service there.
1938 -- 75 years ago: Poppies were blooming today at the headquarters of the Rock Islandunit of the American Legion auxiliary at the Y.M.C.A. as the little red memorial flowers, which the people of Rock Island will wear in honor of veterans.
1963 -- 50 years ago: One hundred and fifty of the best show horses in Illinois and Iowaare expected to compete tomorrow for some $500 in trophies, ribbons and prize money inthe first major horse show of the season.
1988 -- 25 years ago: Moline Public Hospital presented blue ribbons to the winnersof a recent poster contest, held in conjunction with National Hospital Week. Utilizingthe theme of "You're Our Specialty," the following were grand prize winners: MindyBenson, Moline; Thao Dang, Moline; Gared Laux, Moline; John Murphy, Rock Island;Justin Pulford and Bennie Jo Starkey, Moline.
