John 'Jack' Korn
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport. A reception will follow at the church. Jack was born Nov. 14, 1928, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to Vera (Cox) and Ferdinand Korn. Growing up his favorite activities were ice skating at Vander Veer Park and playing golf at Springbrook. He attended Davenport High School, graduating in 1946. Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he became a corporal. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor for some time when he was chosen to participate in Operation Sandstorm in the Marshall Islands. During this operation he was part of a security detail aboard the USS Albemarle at the Eniwetok Atoll. Operation Sandstone was one of many nuclear bomb tests conducted after World War II and included three detonations in the spring of 1948. Jack also was given the responsibility of rebuilding the golf course for the Officers Club at Pearl Harbor, which is still in place today. Following his service with the Marine Corps, Jack attended the University of Iowa and then the Illinois College of Podiatry in Chicago. He practiced podiatry in Davenport for 45 years, including coming out of retirement to work part-time caring for patients in nursing homes. He married Gwen Andresen on Aug. 21, 1954, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport. Jack was a faithful and active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Outing Club and the former Davenport Club. For many years he delivered Meals on Wheels (Meal Service of Scott County), read the news on WVIK's radio channel for the blind and volunteered at the German American Heritage Center in Davenport. He also is past president of the Iowa Podiatry Society, the Davenport Osteopathic Foundation, the Meal Service of Scott County and Davenport Kiwanis. Jack is survived by his wife, Gwen; son, John Jr. (Karen); daughter, Katherine (Craig) Church; and grandchildren, Susan Korn, Ellen Korn, William Korn, Anne Church and Sarah Church. Memorials may be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church, the Genesis VNA Hospice Program or the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island, is assisting the family. The first celebration will be the Memorial Dayprogram at 10 a.m. May 30, at the Brettun and Black Store Museum on River Road. Therewill be a sesquicentennial display.
