Stanley Williams
Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. A Celebration of Life, to share stories and memories of Stan, will be held Friday, March 1, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the VFW, 1721 7th St., in Moline. Wendt Funeral Home of Moline, is assisting the family with the arrangements. Stanley R. Williams was born in Centerville, Iowa, on Aug. 15, 1942, to James and Opal Bever Williams. On June 1, 1996, in Bullhead, Ariz., he married Sharon Davis, who survives. He graduated with the East Moline United Township High School class of 1960, and attended Black Hawk College in Moline. He served in the U.S. Army from 1961 until 1964, and was a sharpshooter, a member of the competition shooting team and a general supply specialist. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and reading. He retired from Deere & Company in August 2001, after 37 years. In addition to his wife, Sharon, survivors include sons, Bill Davis and Allen Davis; grandchildren, Jami (Chris) Gordon, Adrianne (David) LaGrange and Aaron Davis; great-grandchildren, Lexi Gordon, Carter, and Keira and Colton LaGrange; and a brother, Dr. Charles (Donna) Williams. A special thanks to best friend Jan Krueger, of Silvis. Also thank you to Stan's driver in his final years, Mrs. Kenneth (Diane) Stencer, of Carbon Cliff. 1938 -- 75 years ago: Work on Aledo's new $38,000 swimming pool was started thismorning at South Park when ground for the pool was broken by Mayor John W. Murphy.
1963 -- 50 years ago: Students and teacher at Moline High School called today "MissLeona Day" day at the school in honor of the government teacher who retires at theend of the school term. Although she's been teaching for 43 years at the school, Miss Dayfound a new way of arriving at the school this morning. At 7:30 a.m., a police squad carpulled up in front of Miss Day's home and escorted her to school. A caravan of students' cars joined the procession along the way.
1988 -- 25 years ago: Barbecue cooking and riverfront antics are planned for Discover the
River Day Saturday in Leach Park, Bettendorf. A 5K run, wind surfing, a canoe race, hogcalling and more will round out the day under the Interstate 74 bridge.
