Bartholomew Joseph "Bud" Vogel Jr., 87, of Silvis, died on Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 25, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 3205 60th St., Moline. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m., with a prayer service at 5 p.m., Sunday, March 24, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Entombment will be at Calvary Mausoleum in Rock Island, where military honors will be performed by Moline American Legion Post No. 246. Memorials may be made to River Bend Foodbank.
Barth was born on March 2, 1926, in Andalusia, the son of Bartholomew J. Sr. and Kathryn Frances Plunkett Vogel. He married Mary "Kay" Catherine Dempsey on June 28, 1948, in Champaign, Ill.
He worked for Deere & Co. for 35 years, retiring in 1991, as the manager of Parts Logistics. Barth served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Moline. During that time, he was a trustee, Parish Council member, Eucharistic minister, Pastoral Care minister and head of the food pantry. Currently, he was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. For 30 years, Barth was chairman of the board at River Bend Foodbank. Although he retired in 2012, he remained on the board.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Catherine "Kay" Vogel; sons, Peter (Julie) Vogel, Moline, Matthew Vogel, Allen, Texas, Timothy Vogel, San Mateo, Calif.; grandchildren, John (Betsy Ratashak-Vogel) Vogel, Rachel (Jonathan) Quinn, Steven Vogel, Barth Vogel, Kelly Vogel; foster grandchildren, Melissa (Alex) Willingham and family, Ryan (Amanda) Mell and family; sisters, Anna Marie Brune, Henderson, Nev., Cathryn "Pat" Leins, Lakewood, Colo., Toni (Sam) Hagenian, South Lyon, Mich.; sister-in-law, Patricia Vogel, Rock Island; many nieces; nephews; cousins; and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; foster daughter, Janis (Terry) Mell; brother, Joseph Vogel.
Barth's family would like to thank the staff at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis, for the compassion and care they gave to Barth.
