Henry County Humane Society – Geneseo builds new animal shelter

Ground breaking ceremony to be held at new location

Geneseo, IL – After six years of planning, the Henry County Humane Society – Geneseo will host a groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate the beginning of construction of their 4,000 square foot animal shelter with an attached 1,200 square foot storage garage. The ceremony will be held at 14606 Roos Hill Road in Geneseo at 3:00 pm on April 26.
The project will include facilities to house 80 cats and 10 dogs, and will include separate canine and feline sick quarters, intake rooms, and get-acquainted rooms. Additional areas include a meeting room, a dog wash, a laundry room, office and reception areas, and restrooms. The shelter will be constructed to the east of the current animal shelter on 4.6 acres of land purchased in January by the Humane Society from the City of Geneseo. The land includes the former city dog park and the Lion's Club pavilion, both which will remain open to the public. Reservations for the pavilion can be made by calling the Humane Society at (309) 944-4868.
The steel pole Lester Building was purchased from Bob Johnson Construction Company in Geneseo, Illinois. Mr. Johnson will also serve as general contractor for the project. Funding for the purchase and construction of the building, foundation and concrete floors was provided by John and Carla Edwards of Geneseo. Chuck Kibler of Geneseo worked with the Humane Society on the floor plan. IEFM Consulting Engineers of Coal Valley, Illinois, will provide mechanical engineering services, which will include the plans for the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and electrical that will be sent out for bid to complete the inside of the building.
The Henry County Humane Society - Geneseo was incorporated in 1975 and has operated out of the City of Geneseo's animal shelter since its inception. Funding from the community was received through a project started in 2006 by the Geneseo Telephone Company's "Tails A Waggin'" campaign. Additional funds are still needed to complete the interior of the building, to include the electrical, mechanical, and septic systems. Although the final costs have yet to be determined, a rough estimate of $500,000 has been considered. Donations to assist with the completion effort may be sent to Henry County Humane Society – Geneseo,
P.O. Box 145, Geneseo, Illinois, 61254, or may be made online via the website at http://www.geneseoanimalshelter.com.
