Sadly, U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos has made the decision to do this year's Congressional Art Competition 100 percent online. For those of you not familiar with this competition, it is a unique opportunity in which a U.S. congressman is able to showcase the artistic talents of high school students within his/her district, thereby acknowledging the nation's gifted young artists.|
The winning entry from each district is prominently displayed in the Cannon Tunnel in Washington, D.C.
In the past, 17th Congressional District offices always have held a true art exhibition, allowing the art pieces to be displayed in the venue of choice and the contestants, along with their families and art teachers, are invited to attend and proudly take part in this very important day.
This is a special event that should not be minimized by Ms. Bustos and her staff who simply cannot be bothered with events that are not part of launching her Washington-based political career! This event always has held a very special place in the young and upcoming art community. It truly is a shame she has chosen to handle the event this way; shame on you, Bustos!
I truly hope it does not discourage inspiring young artists from participating in this cherished event. I'm sure it is unknown to Ms. Bustos, but access to the Internet is not available to all students. She needs to remember she represents all of the 17th District, not just the wealthy and privileged, and people of voting age!
