William Julius "Bill" Roberts, 74, passed away on April 21, 2013, after a brief stay at Edward Hospital, Naperville, Ill.
Celebration of Life service is at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at Weerts Funeral Home, 3625 Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport, IA 52807, with the Rev. Bartlett Wilkerson officiating. Family and friends may visit with the family from noon until service time. Military interment will take place at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, at a later date. Memorials in Bill's name may be made to the National Kidney Foundation (800-622-9010) or The Heart Foundation, 31822 Village Center Road, Suite 208, Westlake Village, Calif.
Born April 8, 1939, in Davenport, to Joshua and Odessa Thompson Roberts, Bill was a Davenport High School and St. Ambrose College graduate. An Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam Era, Bill retired from Ford Motor Company after 28 years, where he really enjoyed interacting with dealers throughout the Midwest. Bill will be greatly missed by his family and many friends and his golfing buddies in Iowa, Illinois and New Mexico. Of all his interests, golf was his true passion. Family and friends also will miss Bill's distinguished and entertaining singing of popular tunes, especially his remarkable memory of countless song lyrics.
A 23-year resident of Naperville, Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, Janice Randell Roberts; and daughters, Roz Roberts, Aurora, Ill., and Meredith Roberts, Naperville. Also surviving are Bill's sister, Flora Bland, Davenport; a very special niece who donated her kidney to Bill, Colleen Bostic, Davenport; nephew, Dwight Bland (Denise), Davenport; brother, Howard B. (Ricky) Roberts, Rock Island; and nephews, Cornell (Sylvia) Bland, Ottumwa, Iowa, and Terry (Saundra) Bland, Farmerville, La. Bill also is survived by a host of great-nieces and -nephews, and many special cousins who will miss him dearly. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Dr. Earl E. (Jody) Roberts, Joshua D. "JD" Roberts and Bernard "Bernie" C. Roberts.

1914 -- 100 years ago: Work on the new telephone building on 18th Street between 6th and 7th avenues is progressing rapidly.
1939 -- 75 years ago: Rock Island's new theater at 3rd Avenue and 19th Street will have a name significant of its location. The "Rocket" is scheduled to open Thanksgiving Day.
1964 -- 50 years ago: Two of Rock Island's newest water towers were vandalized last night, including the one at 38th Street and 31st Avenue, where police took five Moline boys into custody about 9 p.m..
1989 -- 25 years ago: Some of us who live in the Quad-Cities take the Mississippi River for granted, or at least we used to. But the river is not taken for granted by our visitors. And most Quad-Citians are realizing the importance of the river to this area as increased emphasis is placed on tourism.
