Rock Island attorney Eric Reyes has announced plans to run in the Republican primary for the 17th Congressional District.|
Mr. Reyes initially ran as a Democrat in the 2012 elections but dropped out before the primary and ran as an independent candidate in the general election won by U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-East Moline.
Mr. Reyes has since joined the Republican Party and could face a primary election contest against former Congressman Bobby Schilling, who said he's considering seeking the party's nomination for the 2014 election.
Rep. Bustos has not wasted any time replenishing her campaign funds since her election victory last November.
She raised $204,000 in the first three months of the year, according to the Federal Election Commission, and finished the quarter with $211,000 cash on hand.
Rep. Bustos defeated Mr. Schilling 53-47 percent in the 2012 election.
But Republicans hope the 2014 mid-term elections are a repeat of the 2010 off-year election, when the party pulled off a major upset by ousting former Democratic Congressman Phil Hare.
TheDemocratic Congressional Campaign Committee recently named Rep. Bustos one of the 26 members of its "Frontline Program," which is designed to protect vulnerable incumbents.
