Jenna Hull
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Jenna Hull, daughter of Mark and Cheryl Hull, of Rock Island, graduated from Macalester College on May 18 with a liberal arts degree in mathematics. She is a graduate of Rock Island High School.

Michelle Trommer
URBANA, Ill. -- Michelle Trommer, daughter of Kenneth and Phyllis Trommer, of East Moline, graduated from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree on May 12. She graduated from United Township High School in 2004 and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, in 2008.

SEARCY, Ark. -- Sierra Struble, of Aledo, was named to the Harding University dean's list for the spring semester for earning a 3.65 or higher grade-point average.

Murray Stoffa
RIPON, Wis. -- Murray Stoffa was named to the dean's list at Ripon College for the spring semester for earning a 3.4 grade-point average or higher. He is the son of Col. Donald Stoffa, of Davenport.

Kayla Blackburn
DANVILLE, Ill. -- Kayla Blackburn, of Taylor Ridge, was among 26 students recognized as a new member of the Lakeview College of Nursing Honor Society. She is a 2007 graduate of Rockridge High School, a 2011 graduate of Monmouth College and the daughter of Beth Blackburn.

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. -- Elizabeth Manary, of Moline, received the Earle B. Miller Scholarship in Mathematics, Jeanne Rantz Rammelkamp Scholarship and the Rammelkamp Honor Scholar at the Illinois College Celebration of Excellence on April 26.

SEWARD, Neb. -- Naomi Iltis, of LeClaire, was named to the Concordia University honors list for the second semester for placing in the top 25 percent of undergraduate students.

Spotlight on Literacy Awards
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- The winners of the 2013 Spotlight on Literacy Awards were recognized as outstanding students and volunteer tutors in Illinois literacy programs. Among the Spotlight on Service winners was Black Hawk College student Laurie Tyler.

Shelby Wilson
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Shelby Wilson, daughter of Don and Lyni Wilson, of Moline, was named to the fall dean's list at Evangel University for earning a grade-point average of 3.6 or higher.

Shelby Jackson
MARSHALL, Mo. -- Shelby Jackson, of Cambridge, is a May 2013 graduate of Missouri Valley College. Shelby graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice. She also was named to the spring 2013 dean's list. Requirements for the dean's list are a 3.3 or higher grade-point average, at least 12 graded hours for the semester and no "D," "F," or "Incomplete" grades for the semester.

ST. LOUIS -- Mark Struve, of Davenport, earned dean's list honors for the spring 2013 semester at Maryville University. Undergraduate students are eligible for the dean's list when they complete at least 12 Maryville University credit hours in a semester with a minimum of a 3.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.

1864 -- 150 years ago: We are informed by J.H. Hull that the reason the street sprinkler was not at work yesterday settling the dust on the streets, was because one of his horses was injured.
1889 -- 125 years ago: Bonnie McGregor, a fleet-footed stallion owned by S.W. Wheelock of this community, covered himself with glory at Lexington, Ky, when he ran a mile in 2:13 1/2. The horse's value was estimated as at least $50,000.
1914 -- 100 years ago: Troops are pouring into Paris to prepare for defense of the city. The German army is reported to be only 60 miles from the capital of France.
1939 -- 75 years ago: The German army has invaded Poland in undeclared warfare. Poland has appealed to Great Britain and France for aid.
1964 -- 50 years ago: Publication of a plant newspaper, the Farmall Works News, has been launched at the Rock Island IHC factory and replaces a managerial newsletter.
1989 -- 25 years ago: Officials predict Monday's Rock Island Labor Parade will be the biggest and best ever. Last minute work continues on floats and costumes for the parade, which steps off a 9:30 a.m.
