Soil and Water Conservation District Hosts Spring Tree and Seed Sale

Rock Island County Soil and Water Conservation District is hosting a spring tree and seed sale to promote conservation—including backyard conservation. Consider planting native trees, shrubs, grasses, and flowers to promote diversity and wildlife habitat on your acreage or in your backyard.

Rock Island County SWCD is taking orders for seedlings and containerized trees for conservation through March 27th. Pick up is Thursday, April10that the SWCD office located at 3020 1st Ave E, Milan.Seedling quantities are limited- place your order soon to ensure availability. Orders from outside Rock Island County are welcome; however, your local SWCD may sponsor a sale which may be more convenient.

The tree order form is available at www.rockislandswcd.org or call to have one mailed. For questions contact the SWCD staff at 309-764-1486, x3.

RISWCD is also offering a native seed mix designed to attract and provide habitat for pollinators. Seed will be ordered in bulk and divided for small plots—perfect for the backyard conservationist. For larger acreages, SWCD staff can assist you with a custom mix. Native seed should be planted early spring to June 1st.Call the SWCD office to place an order.

Rock Island County SWCD is a local unit of government, and sale proceeds benefit Rock Island SWCD's mission of providing services to enhance, protect, conserve and promote the soil, water, and related resources in Rock Island County.

1889 -- 125 years ago: Bonnie McGregor, a fleet-footed stallion owned by S.W. Wheelock of this community, covered himself with glory at Lexington, Ky, when he ran a mile in 2:13 1/2. The horse's value was estimated as at least $50,000.

1939 -- 75 years ago: The German army has invaded Poland in undeclared warfare. Poland has appealed to Great Britain and France for aid.
1964 -- 50 years ago: Publication of a plant newspaper, the Farmall Works News, has been launched at the Rock Island IHC factory and replaces a managerial newsletter.
1989 -- 25 years ago: Officials predict Monday's Rock Island Labor Parade will be the biggest and best ever. Last minute work continues on floats and costumes for the parade, which steps off a 9:30 a.m.
