The Quad City Engineering and Science Council recognized seven people at its 52nd annual National Engineers Week banquet on Feb. 20.|
The QCESC includes more than 30 local engineering and technical groups with a membership of 5,000 engineers and scientists. It promotes engineering and science to area youth through scholarship and engineering competition programs.
Those honored were:
- Eric Reinsch, 2014 Junior Engineer of the Year
Mr. Reinsch is a structural engineer with KJWW Engineering Consultants in Rock Island and has been lead engineer on projects ranging from healthcare facilities to forensic studies. He works to develop new consulting business in the Middle East and mentors young professionals in the Rock Island and India offices.
- Bernard Romig, 2014 co-Senior Engineer of the Year
Dr. Romig is a principal engineer with the Deere & Company Moline Technology Innovation Center. After a more than 40-year career spanning a wide variety of internal computing support and factory product design projects leading to 14 U. S. patents, he is recognized throughout Deere, its external suppliers and the academic community for consistently creating solutions to a wide variety of scientific and design challenges.
His work has included suspension and adjustable steering designs for self-propelled sprayers, synchronization of drive wheel speed with steer angle for zero-turn-radius mowers, utilization of electric actuators for active seat suspensions and software development for predicting tractor power hop vibration.
- David Stephan, 2014 co-Senior Engineer of the Year
Mr. Stephan is chief electrical engineer for PCT Engineered Systems in Davenport. Leading a group of 10, he develops applications for electric drives and control systems for products ranging from thin plastic films to steel and aluminum slabs and coils. He is an adviser for North Scott High School's engineering and manufacturing program and is active with Boy Scout engineering programs.
- Lain Pacini, 2014 Junior Scientist of the Year
Mr. Pacini is a senior environmental engineer with Stanley Consultants in Coralville. He has been the company's lead air dispersion modeler for seven years and has led efforts to solve complex air quality compliance and permitting issues for major industrial, institutional and utility clients. His work with utilities includes air pollution control technology retrofits at several coal-fired power plants resulting in significant air emissions reductions.
- Michael Knott, 2014 Senior Scientist of the Year
Michael Knott, recently retired chief of environmental services with Stanley Consultants in Muscatine, has 44 years of experience and now works part time for Stanley Consultants using his engineering and biological science skills to develop applications for permits for large river-related industrial and commercial developments.
Mr. Knott has seined salmon in Alaska, designed turtle barriers for highways in Minnesota, waded swamps in Alabama, flown transmission line routes looking for alternative locations, performed mussel surveys in a dozen states, mist-netted bats and conducted surveys for endangered and threatened mussels, bats, crayfish, salamanders, turtles, fish, snakes, birds, beetles, small mammals and plants in about 20 states.
- Lyle Stephens, 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award
Mr. Stephens is a retired senior engineer from the Deere & Company Moline Technology Innovation Center. He is an accomplished engineer in the application of soil dynamics to seeding, tillage and earth-moving equipment as recognized by his six patents. He has provided outstanding leadership to the agricultural engineering profession at the national level as president of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers.
- Gregory Smith, 2014 STEM Teacher of the Year Award
Mr. Smith is a Project Lead The Way instructor in the Davenport schools where he teaches digital electronics, principles of engineering, computer integrated manufacturing and engineering design. Outside the classroom, he has coached teams to the Iowa state championships in the FIRST Tech Challenge robotics and Real World Design Challenge aircraft design competitions.
- Jeffrey Richland, 2014 STEM Volunteer of the Year
Mr. Richland is superintendent of Electrical Utilities and Furnace Quality Assurance at the Alcoa Davenport Works. He has supported the QCESC-sponsored student competitions as a First Lego League judge for three years and a First Tech Challenge judge for the past two years. He is on the Hamilton Tech College Advisory Board. Before moving to the Quad-Cities, he was a volunteer in the SAE World in Motion program in the Detroit area.
