For the 2013-2014 fiscal year ending June 30, 2014, the Orion Fall Festival has announced that grants totaling $24,055.91 have been made to individuals and community groups within the Orion Community Unit School District No. 223. Grants made to individuals totaled $16,441.30, and community groups received $7,614.61.
The Orion Fall Festival is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization. Together with community organizations and volunteers, it sponsors the festival every Labor Day Weekend. Funds raised are returned to the community which is comprised of the school district which includes the cities of Orion, Osco, Andover and Lynn Center and their surrounding communities. The funds serve the medical needs of individuals and community needs such as fire and ambulance equipment, park improvements, the Orion Area Food Pantry and various community activities. Held since 1972, total disbursements to the community have totaled nearly $680,000.
While grants to individuals are private and not disclosed, community groups benefited and activities receiving funds included: Orion Boy and Girl Scouts, Orion Music Boosters, the Kids Easter Egg Hunt, holiday baskets for the Orion Food Pantry, Main Street Orion activities, Christmas in the Park, the Orion After Prom Committee, and the Village of Andover for park improvements.
The 2014 42nd. Orion Fall Festival will be held Labor Day Weekend, August 29-31, 2014. Activities begin at 5 p.m., Friday, August 29 and end at 6 p.m., Sunday, August 31.
