CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago will host a national conference on volunteer service this June.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office said Saturday that thousands of people are expected to take part in workshops and plenary sessions to discuss ways to encourage people to volunteer. The June 18-20 event will also include chances to get involved in service projects throughout the city.
Former first lady Barbara Bush will speak at the opening plenary session.
Other speakers will include actor Kevin Bacon, Chicago Bears star Israel Idonije and U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.
The conference is organized by leading volunteer organization Points of Light.
The group's chief executive, Michelle Nunn, says the goal is to help volunteers 'use their time, talent, voice and money to build strong, vibrant communities.'
