SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka is recovering at a Springfield hospital after fracturing her hip.

Topinka spokesman Brad Hahn says Topinka fell Wednesday as she was getting onto an elevator at a Springfield hotel. She had just given an address to the Illinois Public Health Association.

He says Topinka suffered a small fracture in her left hip and underwent a minor surgery at Memorial Medical Center later Wednesday. She remains at the hospital, but is walking around and recovering well.

Last year Topinka underwent knee replacement surgery. She has used a cane in the past and had an infection two years ago that caused knee problems.

Topinka was elected comptroller in 2010. The Republican is a former state lawmaker and state treasurer.
