RI's free leaf collection starts Oct. 8

ROCK ISLAND -- Rock Island will provide free leaf collection for residential refuse customers Oct. 8 through Nov. 30. Leaves must be in approved paper yard waste bags and placed at the normal garbage collection location on the regular collection day.

A yard waste sticker is not required on bagged leaves during this time period, and the city will furnish bags at no cost starting Monday at the following locations and times:

-- 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, Rock Island City Hall, 1528 3rd Ave.; public works, 1309 Mill St.;

Community Caring Conference (Church of Peace), 1114 12th St.

-- 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, Martin Luther King Center, 630 9th St.

-- 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sunset Marina Office, 31st Avenue and the Mississippi River

-- 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday, South Rock Island Township Office, 1019 27th Ave. (front of building)

-- 8 am. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, Rock Island Township assessor's office, 2827 7th Ave., Suite 1 (back of building)

Residents will be given as many leaf bags as needed while supplies last but are limited to 10 bags per day. Residents must provide proof of Rock Island residence through a photo ID or official mail.

The bags provided by the city may be used only during the free leaf-collection period or in future free leaf-collection programs.

No grass clippings, leaves or other materials may be placed in the street or dumped into ravines.

Those who do so are subject to fines from $250 to $1,500 per violation per day.

City ordinance prohibits the burning of leaves or yard waste. Violators can be fined up to $40 for the first offense. Violations can be reported by calling the police nonemergency number, (309) 732-2677.

Recreational fires or outdoor fires burning materials other than leaves are allowed, but certain rules must be followed. For more information go to rigov.org.
