Bi-State Literacy Council recognizes individuals for service

Sharon De Frieze, of Coal Valley, received the 2012 Sister Camille Clark Exemplary Service Award at the Bi-State Literacy Council's recent recognition breakfast.

The event also featured individual and volunteer/tutor awards for literacy service and the presentation of college scholarships.

Ms. De Frieze has served on the Bi-State Literacy Board since it was established in 1988. She serves as treasurer and has for a majority of the years she has been a member. She is the former CEO of the Quad City Area Labor-Management Council. During her tenure workplace literacy became a necessity in the 1980s and '90s, and she opened doors for Bi-State to serve through a workplace grant, providing GED training to workers and to the laid-off unemployed.

Literacy Award recipients were Josef Hoffman and Vanessa Marie Taylor.

Community Volunteer Award recipients were Dave Roede, Tom Bulger, Nancy Brown, Robert Greene, Jane Bahls, Mary Kirchne and Sherry Bogan.

Scholarship recipients were Lydia Ann Wilhite, Charlene Myers and Nicole Bushnell.
