The Illinois Department of Corrections has named Tod Van Wolvelaere as new warden of the East Moline Correctional Center.
After former warden Steve Ballard announced his retirement in March, Mr. Van Wolvelaere was named acting warden and became permanent warden on Aug. 1.
He worked for 20 years in the Rock Island County Sheriff's Department and became assistant warden of operations at EMCC in 2003, IDOC spokeswoman Stacey Solano said.
His salary will be $76,028 a year.
Mr. Van Wolvelaere lives in Moline and is a Rock Island High School graduate.
EMCC has an annual budget of about $25 million and an operational capacity of 1,268, according to IDOC. The most recent numbers from the state put the prison's population at 1,274. IDOC estimates the average annual cost per inmate was $23,409 for fiscal year 2010.
