1862 — 150 years ago: Capt. Galt, who had one leg horribly fractured in three places by jumping from a steamboat, is still lying in great pain at the Island City Hotel.
1887 — 125 years ago: The new ice house on Moline Avenue has been completed, andthere are four sheds which have a storage capacity of 2,000 tons each.
1912 — 100 years ago: Banks of Rock Island County are opposing a scheduled electionfor County Judge on grounds that the County has insufficient funds.
1937 — 75 years ago: James F. Witter has been elected head of the Rock Island Kiwanis Club.
1962 — 50 years ago: An audience estimated by school officials as more than a thousand
last night attended the Rock Island High School Dramatic Club play, "The MiracleWorker," held in the school auditorium. Reaction after the play indicated that it was oneof the best efforts by the club, with one official saying it was the best play in years. Thecrowd also was one of the best for many years.
1987 — 25 years ago: Servus Rubber Co. workers approved a three-year contract Sunday for more supplemental pay and a preferred insurance plan. Workers approved thecontract by a 175-105 vote only hours before their contract expired at midnight according to Donna Crull, president of United Rubber Workers Local 215.
