Young Vikings win second in a row on road

DePERE, Wis. -- Augustana College men's basketball coach Grey Giovanine isn't usually speechless.

On Tuesday night, though, the veteran Viking mentor was stumped after his young team moved to 2-0 on the season with another impressive road victory. This one was a 74-60 handling of St. Norbert at the Schuldes Sports Center as freshmen Ben Ryan and Griffin Pils combined for 34 points.

"I'm not sure,'' said Giovanine when asked how his young team won again on the road. "I'm a little taken back to be honest with you. I just keep bracing myself for the fall.''

So far, that fall hasn't happened. But the coach made the effort to get his young team ready for another test against a team Giovanine said should be in good stead to make an NCAA National Tournament appearance.

Augie raced out to a double-digit lead just nine minutes in. That margin stretched to 17 late in the first half and the Green Knights never were in the game after that despite a spirited second-half charge.

To make sure his team shook off the long bus ride, Giovanine switched up the pregame routine a bit.

"We went through a series of dynamic stretches and sprint work on the game floor before (St. Norbert) came out,'' said Giovanine of increasing heart rates and getting a sweat going. "We really wanted them to get the 5 1/2-hour trip out of their system.''

Ryan popped for 18 points (7-for-10 from the floor) and grabbed 11 rebounds. Both were game-high marks. Pils came in off the bench to add 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc.

Augie out-rebounded the Green Knights (1-1) by a 43-26 margin, showing what Giovanine called grit against a veteran team that returned all five starters from last season.

"We had 43 points from our freshmen, on the road, against a team that could be in the NCAA tournament,'' said Giovanine. "What we're finding is that youth and naivety is a blessing.''

So is depth. The Vikings had 10 players score with Galesburg prep Brandon Thompson adding nine and sophomore point guard Dan Jurgutis eight. Just back from an ankle injury, Kevin Schlitter added six points. Brandon Kunz added five points to go with seven rebounds.

Augie was also 17-of-20 from the free-throw line and 7-of-14 on 3-point shooting.

"This was just a great win,'' said Giovanine, whose club travels on Saturday to play the University of Chicago (3-0) and former Rock Island standout Royce Muskeyvalley in a game that has been moved to a 3 p.m. start.
