Augusta L. "Gustie" Stewart, 97, of Hillsdale, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at Illini Restorative Care, Silvis.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Gibson-Bode Funeral Home, Port Byron. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Clinton Lawn Cemetery, Clinton, Iowa. Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church, Port Byron.
Augusta was born Nov. 23, 1915, in Coe Township, Hillsdale, the daughter of Charles and Virginia Huyvaert Kessler. She married Merle D. Stewart on Aug. 23, 1947, in Hampton. He preceded her in death in 1999. She attended Bethel Baptist Church, rural Port Byron.
Gustie enjoyed volunteering at the Project Now meal site, sewing and knitting for the church, and baking and making homemade donuts, peanut brittle and peanut clusters. In her earlier years she and her husband enjoyed farming, dancing and traveling.
Survivors include her nieces and nephews, Shirley and Vern Winter, Rock Island, Donetta Wainwright, Port Byron, Paulette and Steve Ziegler, Port Byron, Jim and Mary Lu Stewart, Port Byron; great-nieces and -nephews, Craig and Robin Wainwright, Port Byron, Kirk and Beth Wainwright, Hillsdale, and Kristie Sorensen, Port Byron; and special cousin, Louise (Huyvaert) Stritesky, East Moline. She was preceded in death by her husband; and a brother, Richard Kessler.
