December 16th, POLYRHYTHMS Third Sunday Jazz Workshop & Matinee Series presents "Kind of Red and Green": A Christmas Tribute to the Music of Miles Davis, by The Corey Kendrick Quintet at the RME on the corner of 2nd & Main, Davenport, IA. To help demystify jazz for the curious and the open minded, Kendrick will conduct a workshop about the impact of Miles Davis on the history and development of jazz music and what can be learned from Miles' approach to trumpet playing and leadership.
The concert highlights traditional Christmas music presented in the style of well-known Miles Davis arrangements and compositions, and features Corey Kendrick – piano, Peter Hart – saxophone, Manny Lopez – trumpet, Ron Wilson – bass, and Manuel Lopez III – on drums.
"Polyrhythms and attendees of the Third Sunday Jazz Series have come to expect excellent musicianship and mastery of the instrument as a given from the artists", said Nate Lawrence. "Having watched Corey's steady growth as a musician, side man and soloist over the past few years, we have been particularly impressed with his confidence and sensitivity while enhancing a tune with his deft coloring and shading that suggests understanding beyond his years. We are excited to showcase his talents in a leadership role."
A Quad City native and North Scott High grad, Kendrick began his undergrad studies at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, studying with jazz legend Willie Pickens. Kendrick finished his undergraduate degree at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville where he studied with the renowned Reginald Thomas and regularly performed as part of the Tom Kennedy Trio. Since returning to the Quad Cities, Kendrick has been active in the local music scene, performing at area clubs, churches, and events. In addition, Kendrick teaches music at Black Hawk College.
