Staffer Steve Tappa usually keeps the local running/cycling community in step with happenings in the Quad-Ciies area.
However, this week, Tappa is off and doing his own running, trying to keep up with, and keep tabs on, his family.
So we will do our best to take the baton and run our leg of this community service and fill you in on two upcoming events.
Pump up those tires: The Friday Bike Riders and Quad City Bicycle Club members will be having their ninth annual Christmas Bicycle Lunch on Dec. 19. The gathering is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. At the Machine Shed Restaurant in Davenport. Those attending will be ordering off the menu with a 15-percent tip added. Any club member interested in attending should RSVP to Friday bike scheduler Dave Georlett at by Dec. 18, at firstname.lastname@example.org. RSVPs are requested in order to get a head count for the Machine Shed.
Bandits 5K registration: While the Quad Cities River Bandits first "Bandits Race to Home 5K'' is still four months away, registrations are being taken for the April 6, event. Making this a unique run is that the finish line is the home plate area at Modern Woodmen Park – home to the River Bandits.
There is a good reason for runners to register early as they will be eligible for some great prizes.Early race registration is available at www.riverbandits.com/5K through Dec. 31 and costs $20. The registration fee includes a T-shirt and a ticket to a 2013 River Bandits game. All participants who register early will also be entered into a drawing for a free 32-inch flat screen TV.
All proceeds from the race will benefit the Bandit Scholars Program.
"The Bandits Race to Home 5K will give the Quad-Cities community the incredible opportunity of coming to the finish line on the field of Modern Woodmen Park," said team owner Dave Heller. "For one affordable price, each participant will enjoy a unique race experience and a free River Bandits game while supporting the Bandit Scholars Program that helps Quad Cities area students pay for college."
The race will begin near Modern Woodmen Park and end inside the ballpark on the field near home plate. The 5-kilometer walk and run will begin at 8 a.m. A Fun Run for children 12 years and younger, with the River Bandits mascot Rascal, will also take place later in the morning. Early registration for the Fun Run costs $12, or $15 with a T-shirt.
Participants may also register as a team of five to 10 individuals. The team whose top five finishers have the best total time will win a free suite rental for a River Bandits game.
Individual prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers, as well as to the top three males and females in each age group. All Fun Run participants will receive a ribbon.
There is a graduated race fee based on when you sign up. Registration from Jan. 1 to March 19 are $22 for the 5K and $14 for the fun run ($17 with a T-shirt). Signing up from March 19 to April 3 is $27 for the 5K and $17 for the fun run ($22 with T-shirt).
