1862 -- 150 years ago: We notice assistant assessor C.G. Taylor has discoveredtwo new towns in this county: Illinois City and Camden Mills. We are not aware ofany such towns.
1887 -- 125 years ago: During the last 20 years, 7,448 marriage licenses have been issuedat the Rock Island County Courthouse, and 372 divorces have been granted.
1912 -- 100 years ago: New bedding has been purchased for the Rock Island firedepartment.
1937 -- 75 years ago: Henry Staat, of Monmouth, the largest landowner in WarrenCounty, has died at the age of 95.
1962 -- 50 years ago: A Christmas project to aid the needy will be substituted for theannual Christmas home lighting contest sponsored by the Rock Island Junior Chamber ofCommerce. In the new project, about 30 children from needy families will be given $5each to do their Christmas shopping. The Jaycettes will assist the children in wrappingtheir gifts later in the afternoon.
1987 -- 25 years ago: About 250 active duty soldiers stationed at the Rock IslandArsenal will be retested beginning in January for exposure to the AIDS-relatedvirus. The mandatory testing follows initial tests for the AIDS-related virus – humanimmunodeficiency virus, or HIV – and must take place once every two years.
