Aaron Matthew Rowland, of East Moline, was charged with attempted murder, home invasion and aggravated battery in Rock Island County Circuit Court.

An East Moline man accused of repeatedly stabbing his ex-girlfriend on Sunday made an initial appearance Monday in Rock Island County Circuit Court and was charged with attempted murder, home invasion and aggravated battery.

Aaron Matthew Rowland, 39, shuffled into the courtroom Monday afternoon, his ankles shackled together. He remained silent, arms folded across his chest as the charges against him were read aloud. A public defender will be appointed for Mr. Rowland, who indicated he worked in Davenport but did not have the financial means to post bond or pay for a private attorney.

His was charged after police discovered his ex-girlfriend, Kathleen J. Durbin, 47, was stabbed multiple times Sunday in her East Moline home about 8:40 a.m. She was taken to a hospital in stable but serious condition, according to a police news release. She remained at Genesis Medical Center on Monday night.

Mr. Rowland was arrested shortly after the alleged incident.

At the end of Monday's hearing, Mr. Rowland glanced briefly at a handful of spectators in the courtroom before he was led away. He remained in the Rock Island County Jail on Monday evening on a $200,000 bond and is due to appear again in court Dec. 18 for a preliminary hearing.

If he posts bond, he is to have no contact with the victim, her family or her residence, records indicate.
