Moline emergency crews and Moline police prepare to remove a body from a red Pontiac Grand Prix that was driven into the Mississippi River in the 4500 block of River Drive in Moline early Monday morning, Dec. 10, 2012.

The body of a 28-year-old East Moline woman was found inside a car pulled from the Mississippi River early Monday morning in Moline.

The name of the victim was not released pending notification of relatives.

"It's a tragic, tragic thing that this family is having to go through," said Rock Island County Coroner Brian Gustafson. The woman is believed to have been driving at a high rate of speed on River Drive in Moline and lost control of the vehicle, he said.

A patrol officer noticed tail lights bobbing in the water about 3:30 a.m., and divers retrieved the red four-door car, which had one occupant inside, Detective Scott Williams said at the scene.

About 9:30 a.m. Monday, the vehicle was loaded onto the back of a tow truck across from Butterworth Condominiums at 4412 River Drive, Moline. Its front bumper lay haphazardly across the rocky banks of the Mississippi, but the vehicle appeared to have sustained little additional external damage.
