Silvis businesses raise $1,600 for Toys for Tots
The Silvis Business Association raised more than $1,600 for Toys for Tots during the 11th annual Christmas in Silvis celebration Dec. 1, in addition to the unknown amount collected in the US Marine's donation box.
Part of the money collected came from gift baskets donated by local businesses and wreaths decorated by city officials.
Colona group seeks Giving Tree donations
The Colona School Builders Club, a junior-high student volunteer group sponsored by the East Moline/Silvis Kiwanis Club, is organizing the Giving Tree again this year in an effort to help 138 local children ranging in age from 4 months to 17 years, with a new outfit, shoes, socks, underwear, books and an age-appropriate wish.
People can pick a tag off the tree at the school, BJs Fast Stop, Colona Dollar General, Colona Bank or the Colona Branch of Black Hawk State Bank. Cookie walk slated for Saturday in Port Byron
The Church of the Cross, 22621 Illinois 2 and 92, Port Byron, will hold its annual cookie walk from 9 a.m. until sold out, or 1 p.m. (whichever is later) on Saturday. Cookies and candy will be available for $7 a pound, and there will be crafts, including tied blankets, for sale. For more information, call Diana O'Hara at (309) 235-4623.

First Baptist Church of Colona, 305 1st St., will hold a Christmas program at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday. It will be followed by a potluck. All are invited.
Join Civil War Roundtable at River Valley Library
Learn about the battles of Fredericksburg and Stone River at the River Valley 150th Anniversary Civil War Roundtable at 6 p.m. on Monday, at the River Valley Library, 214 S. Main St., Port Byron. Every month they meet to discuss Civil War events in that month 150 years ago.

Santa stopping at Colona Library
The Colona Library, 911 1st St., Colona, will host Santa Claus from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 20. During the month of December, the library will accept donations of nonperishable food items in lieu of fines for overdue Colona Library materials. All donations will go to the Colona Food Pantry.
The Friends of the River Valley Library will host a Christmas potluck and movie at noon Thursday, Dec. 20, in the Community Room at the River Valley Library, 214 S. Main St, Port Byron. American war sacrifices seen by Europe topic of historical society
Bruce Peterson will show pictures and discuss how Europeans honored American sacrifices in World War I and World War II at the Port Byron Historical Society meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9, on the second floor of the River Valley District, 214 S. Main St, Port Byron.
Mr. Peterson will show pictures of the Vietnam and WWII memorials in Washington, D.C., and pictures of the Vietnam War, where he served in 1968 and 1969.
The meeting is free and open to the public.
Trivia night Saturday at Our Lady of Grace
Our Lady of Grace is hosting a St. Mary's, St. Anne and Our Lady of Grace trivia night Saturday, Jan. 19, in Cleary Hall at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Academy, 1705 6th St., East Moline. Doors open at 5 p.m. and trivia begins at 6 p.m. The cost is $10 a person, with up to eight people on a team. Prices will be awarded for first, second and third place. The Quilting Club of the East Moline Library is raffling Elvis-themed, military-themed and East Moline-themed quilts. Tickets are $5 or three for $10 and are available at the library. Proceeds will go to the library foundation fund.
