A 1997 Ford Windstar van was destroyed by a fire this morning outside the ALDI grocery store in Silvis.
No one was injured in the blaze, which occurred at 8:50 a.m. near the corner of 18th Street and Crosstown Avenue, Silvis Police Chief Bill Brasche said.
Shortly before that, a Moline woman and her adult daughter had retrieved the van from an East Moline auto mechanic shop, where a fuel pump had been installed, officials said.
Silvis Fire Chief David Leibovitz said that as the two women were driving past ALDI, at 1210 18th St., "all of a sudden they heard a loud noise under the hood and then a fire started."
He said the van still was burning when police and fire arrived, but the fire was extinguished by 9 a.m.
Chief Leibovitz said the van, which is registered to Emilianna Hardin, of East Moline, appeared to be unsalvageable and was towed from the scene.
